Essential Wildlife Carer Starter Kit

Essential Wildlife Carer Starter Kit

If you care for native wildlife—whether you're new to rescue or you've been doing it for years—having a reliable "grab-and-go" kit saves time and reduces stress (for you and the animal).

What to include in a basic kit

Feeding & hydration (use only under guidance)

  • Feeding syringes in a few sizes
  • A selection of feeding teats (different shapes/flow rates)
  • Spare bottles, caps, and cleaning brushes

Warmth & containment

  • Soft pouches or cloth wraps (different sizes)
  • A safe heat source (used correctly)
  • A ventilated carrier or secure tub for transport

Hygiene

  • Gloves
  • Paper towels and disinfectant wipes
  • Sealable bags for waste and soiled bedding

Care & admin

  • Notebook/notes on feeds, weights, times
  • Basic first-aid items for carers (not a substitute for vet care)

How to set your kit up so it's actually useful

  • Keep items in clear labelled pouches ("feeding", "warmth", "cleaning").
  • Store backups of the things you run out of most (brushes, gloves, wipes).
  • Make a "restock list" and check it weekly.

A reminder on safety

If you find an injured animal, keep it warm, quiet, and secure, and contact a local wildlife rescue organisation or vet as soon as possible. Avoid feeding unless you've been advised—incorrect feeding can cause serious harm.
