How to Choose the Right Feeding Teat

How to Choose the Right Feeding Teat

One of the most common questions we get is: “Which teat should I buy?” The best option depends on the animal, the feeding method, and the flow rate required.

Start with the goal: safe flow

A safe flow is usually a steady drip when gently squeezed, not a fast stream. Too-fast flow increases the risk of aspiration.

What matters most

  • Size: Smaller mouths usually need smaller teats.
  • Material: Latex and silicone behave differently (see our comparison post).
  • Shape: Some shapes seal better depending on mouth shape and feeding angle.
  • Flow rate: “One size fits all” rarely works—keep a small selection.

Quick at-home testing

Before using a new teat:

  • Fill with water (not formula).
  • Hold at the angle you’d feed.
  • Apply gentle pressure.
  • Look for controlled drops—not a stream.

If you’re unsure

Choose a small selection and start with the smallest, slowest option. If you’re following a carer program, match their guidance.
